The Invasion of Mobile Marketing

Walking around any metropolitan city today it may be hard to find a person who is without a smartphone in their hand, especially in the city of Chicago where I commute daily.  And if I were to find that one without a smartphone or some sort of electronic device, they won’t be without one for long.  We are becoming captive prisoners to our phones and electronic devices. Not only do we use them for the basic needs like phone calls, texting, e-mails, etc., we turn to them for entertainment and to manage our daily lives.  Mobile devices have become increasingly sophisticated and more affordable giving way to easy access.  Think about it, when was the last time you went longer than an hour without checking or using your phone?

“Smartphones and tablets are taking over,” says GMR Marketing’s senior vice president, Bryan Rasch. “As we get past more than 50% of people having smartphones, we’re getting into the meat of consumerism, in which people will have a device that allows them to have a richer engagement with content. This presents lots of opportunities for retailers to introduce a full-blown mobile program.”

It shouldn’t be a surprise that by using mobile marketing you’re taking emerging technology and building valuable customer relationships.  The marketing opportunities due to the substantial ownerships in smartphones are astounding.  Mobile marketing produces more results quicker than any other marketing channel – 9 out of 10 mobile searches lead to action, over half lead to a purchase.  This emerging trend has really been a bombshell within the app market.  You turn to these apps to guide you to a nearby restaurant/bar (Yelp), to give you a creative idea on how to decorate your home (Pinterest) and even to purchase airline tickets (Orbitz).

The era of mobile marketing has truly not even begun.  Although it is currently trending and growing in popularity the surface has yet to be scratched.  Mobile marketing right now is comparable to the NBA star Derrick Rose – just starting to dominate the game, keeping us at the edge of our seats, are we watch the next Michael Jordan…too soon to conclude?  As quickly as we have adapted to our mobile devices, with so much more to come, we may be doing just enough to keep up with the starting line of the mobile invasion!
